SECONDARY VOCATIONAL EDUCATION PROJECT ON JOB TRAINING PILOT
 

Management and staff of Bahrain Airport Services (BAS) welcomed ten students from the Sheikh Khalifa Institute, Kingdom of Bahrain who started work placements as part of the education reforms in secondary vocational schools in Bahrain. BAS is one of seven leading companies that are assisting the Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Economic Development Board, to trial a new approach in working with companies that will identify the Bahrain labour market requirements. The National Education Reform Initiatives are a comprehensive cross-government effort under the leadership of H.E. the Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labour, the Economic Development Board and other key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, and civil society.

General Manager Human Resources & Support Services Mr. Salman Al Mahmeed in a meeting with Carla Scomazon Industry Liason Manager & Gopika Beri A / Head of Training & Development stated that BAS has a strong commitment to the training and education of Bahraini youth.

Gopika Beri, A / Head of Training & Development has working closely with Carla and her Industry Liaison Officers to provide complete assistance and feedback re the training pilot with a view to achieving success in this pilot and futuristic programs. Adnan Abdulla Manager Maintenance, Graham Hurdon Manager GSE Workshop & their team consisting of Yousif Faraj (Eng Training Officer) & Abdulla Aradi (Maintenance Supervisor) have provided training to the ten students coordinated by BAS Training.

Attending the company induction was Economic Development Board (EDB) initiative manager Ms Salma Al Derazi who is overseeing the projects development; she commented “The On Job Training pilot will guide the reform process in developing an effective industry led apprenticeship model for Bahrain.

The students took part in 7 weeks of on the job training in the automotive and electrical areas of operations within BAS. During this time, they were supported by enhanced industry liaison from the Ministry of Education which provided significant support for the company as well as safeguarded the interests of the students within the workplace.

The pilot was completed on May 22nd 2008 with awards and presentations to the top achieving students.
